INTAKE 1984

Welcome to intake 1984, we became intake 1984 so-called (NUMBARI) in January and February 1984, enlisted from Dharan and Pokhara transit camp. The selection process were started from VDC/Panchayat, central area selection centre and Pokhara or Dharan, where physical, mental and psychological testes were over came.

As other fellow Gurkhas we were also fortunate and grateful be selected for the British Army amongst thousands of finest of the fine of young hot blooded Nepalese sons. All rounder pressures were presented but still we were laughing, dancing and learning all new skills in our brand new green uniform since the day we got our British Army number. Flying in a big plan and going around the world dream came true when we took off from Tribhuwan International Airport in Kathmandu for Hong Kong Kaitak international Airport.

Basic soldering training started in Sek Kong Military camp (Training Depot Brigade of Gurkha) Hong Kong with all western worlds fundamental and doctrinal. All these new skills and challenges brought up us to the basic standard of trained soldiers as the rest of the British Army. Most important of all, refined GURKHA and renounce as bravest of the brave fairest of the fear the Gurkha family.

With a small note of this article, The Nala, and cream parade before and after dinner and all platoons’ NCO’s favourite evening entertainment every Friday evening “NACH BHALU NACH”. We still remember some numberi marching along the barracks corridor carrying a 44 pattern pack and empty beer can garlanded in his Nuclear Biological and Chemical (NBC) S6 respirator.

Most of all still remember our own section and platoon well but vaguely recognised them now because we all have changed our shapes and sizes.

Many years have passed by; some of the numbaries are still serving and some of them gone away forever from us but in the mean time most of us are running around in the fast moving world with acquiring knowledge and growing from strength to strength.
